Vernon Dwight Burkhart, 95, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, March 28, 2021, at his home.

He was born June 11, 1925, in Smolan, KS, the son of Joseph W. and Pearl (Sharp) Burkhart. On October 13, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army. He received his Honorable Discharge on November 15, 1946, and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

On September 18, 1948, he and Joyce Ilene Sitler were married in Washington, KS. They were the parents of a son, Bruce.

He attended Texas Tech University. He started Burkhart Electric as a residential electrical contractor. His company operated in 8 states and specialized in large apartment complexes.

He retired in 1970 and made his home in Hartville, MO. In the early 1990's he and Joyce moved to Yates Center. Vernon was a pilot and at one time owned three planes. He loved to fly.

He was a member of the Christian Liberty Fellowship Church in Yates Center. He was active in the community and served as Mayor of Yates Center for several years.

His wife, Joyce, preceded him in death on January 17, 2017, following 68 years of marriage.

He leaves his son, Bruce Dwight Burkhart and his wife Becky of Virgil, KS; three grandchildren, Brandon, Berry, and Dwight Burkhart; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Cremation is planned. Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Virgil Cemetery at Virgil, Kansas.

Military Honors will be conducted by Post #13, American Legion, Yates Center, KS.
