Sally L. Trendel, 85, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away Saturday night, September 22, 2018, at her home.

She was born on September 18, 1933 in Emporia, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Lillian (Conway) Riley and was a life-long resident of Kansas. She graduated from Emporia High School with the Class of 1951 and from Kansas State Teacher's College (now Emporia State University) in 1955. She was active in Future Teachers of America and Home Economics Clubs at KSTC.

On May 27, 1954, she and Robert Trendel were married in Emporia. To this union two children were born.

Sally and Bob were teachers together their entire married life until retirement. She began her teaching career at Strong City High School in Chase County, KS. The family moved to Yates Center in 1961 and she was a stay at home Mother until her children began school. She returned to teaching in 1969 at Gridley High School for one year and then began teaching at Yates Center Junior High School in 1970, teaching Home Economics and Science until her retirement.

Sally enjoyed traveling, bowling, sewing, golf, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and watching K-State, the Chiefs, and the Royals. She golfed and played bridge with a large circle of friends in Burlington and Yates Center for decades until her failing health forced her to quit both. She greatly loved and valued her family and loved to cook and entertain whenever they were around. She was a longtime member of Rock Creek Country Club and the United Methodist Church, both in Burlington. Many batches of cinnamon toothpicks and that infamous red, cinnamon hard candy can be discovered today in the kitchens and homes of her former students.

She touched many lives during her long career teaching Science and Home Economics. One of her greatest joys was to see and share memories with her former students. She could share a memory about almost any student she had in Chase, Coffey, or Woodson Counties.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Ed Riley, Jr. and Stan Riley.

She is survived by Bob, her husband of 64 years; son Steve Trendel of Burlington and daughter Sherri Acosta of Overland Park; two grandsons, Jake Acosta of Manhattan and Sam Acosta of Overland Park; several nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at the Jones Funeral Home. The family will meet Wednesday with friends from 12:30 P.M. until service time. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either Hand in Hand Hospice of Emporia or the Trendel Family Scholarship Fund for Yates Center High School. The family scholarship fund awards a scholarship each year to a graduating Senior at Yates Center High School. They may be sent to Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
