Robert "Bob" Eugene Fife passed away at Sunset Manor, Waverly, KS, on September 27, 2019, at the age of 96.

​Bob was born April 1, 1923 in Colby, KS, the son of Franklin H. Fife and Edith (Riley) Fife.  He was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, Shawnee Mission, KS.

​He entered his military service in the Air Force in February of 1943 and left for overseas duty in May of 1944.  He was a top turret gunner in a B-17 when it was shot down over Germany in July of 1944.  Bob was a prisoner of war for 14 months during which he endured ten months of the Black March across Germany.  He was liberated by British forces in April of 1945 and honorably discharged in November of 1945.  He joined the Navy in December of 46 and served one year.  Bob was called to active duty in the Air Force during the Korean War and served for another year.

​On May 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hermalee Hyder.  They were blessed with a son, Herb, and a daughter, Brenda.  They resided most of their married life in Wichita and later spent their retirement years in Toronto, Kansas.  Bob and Hermalee owned and operated several businesses in both cities.  They were probably best known for the four Hy's Carryouts, two in Wichita one in Madison and one in Toronto.

​Robert was a member of New York Valley Church in Yates Center and a member of the American Legion Post #325 in Toronto.  In his retirement he spent many hours tending their apple orchard and garden.  They loved selling their wares at the Farmers Market in Yates Center.  He was a golfer, hunter and an avid fisherman but loved playing with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids.  He and Hermalee were affiliated with the Enon Builders and helped construct churches from Texas to Kansas.  The Enon Builders helped build the N ew New York Valley Church in Yates Center.

​His wife, Hermalee, preceded him in death on February 13, 2019.  He was also preceded by his parents; his brothers Frank and Jerry Fife; sisters Rosemary Montgomery and Myrna Saunders; and son Herbert.

​He leaves one daughter, Brenda Tracy and husband Oran of Virgil, KS; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Fife Eagle of Virgil, KS; four grandchildren, Tami Jones, Samantha Morgan (Steven), Beth Stockebrand (Michael), and Nathan Fife; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters; Illah Howell and Ruth Suddreth-Davis; a brother, Ted Fife; many other relatives and friends.

​Memorial services will be held 1:30 P.M. Friday, October 4, 2019, at the New York Valley Church of God in Yates Center. Inurnment will follow in Toronto Cemetery.
