Richard Duane "Dick" Newby of rural Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, December 6, 2023, at his home. He was 78.

Dick was born July 11, 1945, at Wichita, KS, the son of Harry Kenneth and Clara Louise (Jones) Newby.

After graduating from high school, he attended technical college.

On November 3, 1965, he became a member of the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge on October 28, 1967, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He had been employed as a mechanic for United Airlines in Denver, CO, before his retirement.

He was a member of Post #13, American Legion, Yates Center, and a member of Gilead Lodge #144, A.F. & A.M.

Dick always enjoyed lending a helping hand to family, friends and the community. He was an avid hunter and loved working on wood projects in his shop. He will truly be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Pat May and June May.

He is survived by Barbara Norton, his beloved partner for the past 21 years and her daughters Amanda (Devin) Spencer and Samantha Hintz; as well as her five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Dick is also survived by his sister, Diane (Mike) Tolle of Andover, KS; his niece, Jody (Mike) Stegman of Scott City, KS; grand-nieces, Jessica and Randee; one great-niece; and four great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Friends for Life, Yates Center.

Cremation is planned. The family will hold private services.
