Larry G. Hess, 76, of Waverly, Kansas Passed away on April 8, 2022, at the Rock Creek Nursing Home in Ottawa Kansas.

He was born August 25, 1945, in Wichita, Kansas the son of Laurence N. Hess and Esther C. (Kretchmar) Hess. He attended Glendale Rural school Northeast of Burlington. He graduated from Burlington Rural High School in 1963 where he was active in football and FFA. In 1968, he received a BS degree from Kansas State University in Agricultural Engineering. He earned a Master's in public administration in 1977 from the University of Kansas.

While at KSU, He was commissioned an Officer in the US Army Corp of Engineers through the ROTC program. He served at several stateside posts before being sent to Vietnam as a MACV advisor to the Vietnamese. 1 ^st Lt. Hess earned several awards in Vietnam including the Soldier's Metal and Bronze Star.

After returning from Vietnam, He was employed by the state of Kansas as an engineer, hydrologist, and environmental engineer for 30 years. He served in the Division of Water Resources Board of Agriculture, Kansas Water Recourse Board, and Department of Health and Environment. He was a Licensed Professional Engineer, Licensed Land Surveyor, and a Certified Hydrologist. He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus.

On October 14, 1989, he married Sallee A. Leaming at St. Francis Catholic Church in Burlington, Kansas. After returning from Vietnam, he farmed with his dad Northeast of Burlington until his dad passed away and then took over the farming operation. He farmed on weekends and vacations until he retired and then he moved with his wife to the farm to take care of his mother.

He was preceded in death by his parents Laurence and Esther Hess and His brother Donald Chaplin, and Wife Vienna He is survived by their children Harlan (Jaylene) Chaplin, Francis (Sunni) Chaplin, Glenda (Stephanie) Mitchell.

He is also survived by his Wife, Sallee Hess; His Siblings, Dale (Barbara) Hess and children Scott and Crissy, Sherlyn (Terry) Graham, Wayne Hess (Sharon Spade) and children Rachel (Joe) Vojtko and Alonzo, Marilyn (Gene) Eccles and children Jackie and Caleb, Norma (Dale) Stager and daughter Brandi, Joyce (Dwight) Krueger and children Sarah and Laura.

A Rosary and Visitation with the family will be on Friday, April 22nd at 7:00 pm at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, KS.  A Mass of Catholic burial will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Burlington, KS.  Memorials are to Coffey County Resource Council or American Diabetes Association and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
