Jay Melvin Atkin, 81, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, November 22, 2021, at Yates Center Health and Rehab.

Jay was born July 29, 1940, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of John Melvin and Margaret (Shaffer) Atkin. He spent his childhood in Grainola, OK, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Northwestern Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State University, before earning his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at the University of Oklahoma. He then resided in Yates Center, KS, and worked at a pharmacy in Independence, KS.

He was married to Mary Sissons and they were the parents of two children. They were later divorced.

Jay opened the Rexall Pharmacy in Yates Center. That business was later destroyed in a fire. He rebuilt the pharmacy, where it stands today, and later sold the business. He then worked at the Wal-Mart pharmacy in Iola. In 1992 he moved to Medford, OR, where he started a pharmacy. In 1994 he moved back to Kansas and was employed at the Walgreens Pharmacy in Wichita.

On May 10, 1997, he and Sandi Hash Scott were married at the United Methodist Church in Yates Center. Jay became a traveling pharmacist for Walmart until his retirement in July of 2016.

Jay enjoyed golfing and was an avid fan of the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State University. He and Sandi enjoyed traveling. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Kay Bais; a grandson, Drew Michael Atkin; and a niece, Sheena Walker.

He leaves his wife, Sandi; his children, Jay Drew Atkin "Tammy" of Gridley, KS, Angela Kristen Atkin "Steve" of Tamarac, FL, Jon Scott "Joy" of Colwich, KS and Tom Scott "Valerie" of Seneca, KS; grandchildren, Kayla Abril, Alex Atkin, Sabryn Scott, Xavier Atkin, Kinsey Scott, Ashtyn Scott, Cooper Scott, and Adisyn Scott; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Camden Abril; his brother, Dr. John D. Atkin "Pat" of Yates Center; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 26. 2021, at the Yates Center United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Yates Center Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.
