James Edward Hoyt, 85, of rural Burlington, passed away early Thursday morning, August 9, 2018, at Sunset Manor in Waverly.

James was born on August 25, 1932, on a farm near Hartford, Kansas, the son of Charles Franklin and Mary Margaret (Stewart) Hoyt.  He grew up on the farm, attended District 18 School and graduated from Hartford High School, Class of 1950.

On August 17, 1969, he was united in marriage with Pamela Sue White, and they would be the parents of four children.

James was a farmer, and truly loved caring for his land and animals.  He had served on the Soil Conservation Board and Pleasant Township Board, ran a road grader for Coffey County Road and Bridge, and had been a member of Odd Fellows Lodge.  He stayed active in his spare time and enjoying bowling, traveling, playing pinochle and pitch, listening to old-time country music, and square dancing with the Prairie Promenaders.

He was baptized into the Hartford Christian Church, had been a member and deacon at the Christian Church of Burlington, and had attended the New Strawn Community Christian Church.

James was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Hoyt, and two sisters, Irene Comeaux and Ellen Hockanson, and by two infant siblings, Harry and Mary Lulu Hoyt.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Pam Hoyt of the home; children Rhonda Hoyt of Overland Park, Kansas, Belinda Moore and Fredell of Emporia, Michael Hoyt and Jean of Lenexa, and Kelly Hoyt and Monika of Bel Aire;  ten grandchildren, Gabrielle, Nia, Markus and Jaxon Moore, and Bailey, Brianna, Andrew, Mackinzie and Mia Hoyt, and Loralei Hoyt;  a sister, Edith Voorhees of Emporia; brother-in-law Bill Hockanson of Wichita; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, with burial will follow at Baker Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 AM until service time on Wednesday morning the Funeral Home.
