Helen Marie Barney, 91, of Yates Center, Ks. Passed away peacefully, Saturday afternoon, May 28, 2022, at Yates Center Health and Rehab.

Helen was born March 9, 1931, on a farm in rural Woodson County the daughter of George Gustave Toedman and Augusta Wilhemina (Wiede) Toedman.  Helen was a resident of Woodson County her entire life.

Helen attended Yates Center grade schools and graduated from Yates Center High School in 1949.  After graduation she went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Yates Center in 1950 working in Yates Center, Eldorado, and later Chanute from which she retired September 30, 1980.

Helen married Gerald Ray Barney on May 3, 1974.  Gerald was a widower with eight sons and two daughters.  Helen said she became a mother and a grandmother all at the same time.

Helen served as Woodson County Register of Deeds for twelve years and retired from office in 1995.  She was active with church, family, farm and civic organizations which she found very interesting.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, brother Loren Toedman, husband Gerald Barney, grandson Michael Barney and granddaughter Mandy Splechter.

She is survived by her step-children, Meredith Barney of Yates Center, Carollyn Barnett, Brenda Morris, and Jerry Barney of Humboldt, KS., Douglas Barney of Ft. Meyer, Fl., Donald Barney and Steven Barney of Yates Center, Gene Barney of Tampa, Ks., Gary Barney of Decatur, Il., Craig Barney of Pikeville, TN., 29 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services to be held 10:30 AM, Tuesday June 7 at the United Methodist Church in Yates Center. Burial will follow at Ellison Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.
