Harold Lee Stubby of Burlington, Kansas passed away January 2, 2020 at the age of 71. He was born May 21, 1948 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Marvin Ray and Norma  Jene (Turner) Stubby. The family was living in Burrton, KS but later moved to a farm near Durham, KS.  Harold started school at Durham Grade School.  The family returned to Burrton in 1955 and Harold attended Burrton Grade School and High School, graduating with the class of 1966. Harold loved sports and participated in football, basketball, and track.  He was also active in school organizations.

After graduation he attended Baker University, Baldwin City, KS where he played football.  He also attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.

In July, 1970, He enlisted in the US Navy.  He served in the Naval Nuclear Power Program, and was stationed aboard the USS Truxtun (DLGN/CGN 35) as a Machinist Mate (MM2) / Engineering Laboratory Technician from 1972 until he was honorably discharged July 6, 1976.

After leaving the Navy, Harold attended Wichita State University, graduating with Honors in May, 1979 from the College of Education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

While attending WSU, he was introduced to Marilyn Jolene Warren, an elementary school teacher who was teaching in El Dorado, KS at the time. Harold soon knew this was the girl for him.  They were married March 11, 1978 in her home town, Medicine Lodge, KS.

Harold and Jolene were devoted to one another and Harold considered Jolene to be his greatest blessing! They were further blessed when the Lord gave them a daughter, Jessica Jo and a son, Zachary Lee.

Harold and Jolene began their life together in El Dorado, she teaching at Jefferson Elementary School and he teaching and coaching at El Dorado Junior High.

They moved to Burlington in June, 1981 when Harold accepted a position as a Chemistry Technician at Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station.  During his career at Wolf Creek he held supervisory positions in Chemistry and Training.  He participated in the Company Speaker's Bureau and was the Project Manager for development of the Power Plant Technology Program with Flint Hills Technical College. He retired from Wolf Creek February 2009.

He was elected to The USD 244 Board of Education where he served one term.  He also served as chairman of the Burlington High School Catbackers Booster Club.

Harold enjoyed coaching Youth Sports teams through the Recreation Center programs. He completed the Bike Across Kansas four times, three with his son.

He worked as a Volunteer-In-Park for the Grand Teton National Park Service during the summer in 2018. Harold shared his love of traveling and national parks with his family through the many vacations they took together.

Harold was a dedicated member of the Burlington United Methodist Church where he served as Youth Group Leader, Lay Leader, Worship Leader, and on various committees. He was a true man of God – a faithful servant and a kind and caring soul.

He is survived by his wife, Jolene of the home; daughter Jessica (Brandon) Hopkins Emporia, KS; son Zachary (Hannah) Stubby Glen Rose, TX; grandsons, Owen Hopkins, Logan Hopkins, and Boyd Stubby. Sister, Rae Jene Beadles (Lee), Pelham, AL; two brothers, Robert Stubby, Norman ,OK and Richard Stubby (Georgia), Newton, KS; and several nephews and nieces.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 6, 2020, at the United Methodist Church in Burlington. The family will receive friends Sunday, 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
