Elizabeth Alma McGee, 89, of Burlington, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Life Care Center of Burlington.

Liz was born on a farm northeast of Gridley, Kansas, on May 5, 1930, the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Howard) Johnson.  She grew up on the family farm and attended Harris Rural School.  She graduated from Burlington High School in the Class of 1948, and went to work at Peoples National Bank.

In 1952, she was joined in marriage to James L. McGee at Emporia. They moved to Toronto and started their family, while Jay taught and coached. In the spring of 1956 a tornado destroyed their home, so they moved to Wichita for a short time, before returning to make their home in Burlington.

Liz was a working mom and supported her kids in Scouting, Church and school activities, while resuming her long career at Peoples National Bank.  She started in the check processing department at the bank, but soon became a teller, well-remembered by the many customers she served at the drive-through window each day.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Burlington, and was honored for her many years of service as area treasurer for the American Heart Association.  In her spare time, she enjoyed bridge parties and activities at Rock Creek Country Club.

During summers and in retirement years, she and Jay enjoyed going to auctions and collecting antiques. They also purchased and remodeled several properties to develop their rental business, and Liz stayed busy looking after their tenants.

She was preceded in death by Jay, her beloved husband of 66 years, and by three siblings, Howard A. Johnson, Jr., Luella Malloy and Rosetta Lawson.

Survivors include her three children, Renee McGee Trimble (Bruce), Gridley, Michael McGee, Aurora, Colorado, and Marc McGee (Alyssa), Seattle, Washington; four grandchildren, Tanner Trimble, Emporia, Morgan Trimble, Cape Town, South Africa, and Maxwell McGee and Quincy McGee, both of Washington, D.C.; and a sister, Darlene Smith of Westphalia.

The family will receive friends for visitation and memories on Thursday, November 7, 2019,  from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.  Private inurnment services will be held at a later date in Gridley Cemetery.
