Edward Harrison "Ed" Hawthorne, age 99, formerly of Eureka, Kansas, passed away on June 5, 2021, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Unit in Wichita, KS. Ed was born May 25, 1922, in Eureka, KS, the son of Glen W. and Mildred (Green) Hawthorne. He attended rural grade school until 7 ^th grade, when his family moved to town, and graduated from Eureka High School in 1940. He attended Wichita State University and Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO, graduating from the latter in 1942. In November of 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater in General Patton's Third Army. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 after being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Purple Heart and an EAME Ribbon with 3 Bronze Service Stars.

On August 8, 1945, Ed was united in marriage to Lois L. Provine. One daughter and two sons were born to this union. Lois passed away in October 1954. On June 20, 1970, Ed was united in marriage to V. Cathryn "Kay" Sodman. They were married for 30 years before Kay passed away in May of 2001.

In November of 1945, Ed became employed by The Citizens National Bank in Eureka and held numerous positions including Chairman of the Board. He retired from banking in January 1981. He served on the Eureka Board of Education as Treasurer for several terms during his banking career. After his retirement, Ed and his wife, Kay, enjoyed traveling and made their winter home in Naples, FL.

Ed was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church in Eureka, where he was Treasurer for several years and served on various committees. He was also an associate member of the East Naples Methodist Church in Naples, FL. Other memberships include the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Greenwood County Cattlemen's Association, Kansas Livestock Association, Eureka Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Fidelity Lodge #106, A.F. & A.M., Eureka Chapter and Commandery, Eastern Star, Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine, Greenwood County Shrine Club, and Royal Order of Jesters.

Ed is survived by one daughter, Cynthia K. Phillips of Emporia, KS; two sons, Ronald R. Hawthorne (Roberta), of Eureka, and Richard L. Hawthorne (Kathy), of Wichita; two step-daughters, Lynda K. Miller (Fred), of Pleasant Valley, MO, and Lori K. Graham, of Newton, KS; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; a son-in-law, Terry Phillips; a step son-in-law, Mike Graham; a step granddaughter, Pam Hamilton; and a great grandson, Sawyer John Reneau.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Eureka United Methodist Church, 521 N. Main St., Eureka, KS. The family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time Monday in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

Burial with military honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery at Eureka.
