Dorene Ellen Smith, 84, long-time Hartford, Kansas resident, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018, in Topeka, Kansas.

Dorene was born November 3, 1933, on the Henry and Katie Hatch farm in rural Gridley, Kansas. She was the daughter of Homer and Grace (Goodrick) Hatch.

When she was 10 the family moved to a farm 8 miles west of Burlington. She attended Sunnyside District #94 rural school through the 4 ^th grade and Patmos rural school through the 8 ^th grade. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1951. She was active in school plays, Glee Club, FFHA, and Kayettes. She also played in the band and was band Majorette. She was active in the Champion 4-H Club and won many awards at county and state fairs. Later she was a leader for the Busy Beaver 4-H Club for several years where she helped with sewing and cooking and truly enjoyed those things.

On September 12, 1954, Dorene and Ivan E. Smith were married at the Hartford United Methodist Church. They moved to their farm south of Hartford where they spent the next 61 years.

Dorene worked for 24 years at the Gridley Dental Office of her son, Rick. She was an active member of the Hartford United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for 15 years, helped organize and taught Bible School, was active in U.M.W., and was a Trustee for many years. She was also a Penny Supper Chairman and helped decorated the Church at Holiday time. She loved raising flowers and often brought flowers for Sunday church services. She was active in the Lyon county Extension Council, Eagle Creek E.H.U., Gridley Harmony Gals, and Senior Citizens. She served on the Lyon County Zoning Board for 8 years and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. In earlier years she worked at the Kansas State Capital and for an Attorney. Dorene and Ivan enjoyed traveling and had taken many bus trips and traveled to many places including Alaska and Central America. She also loved caring for her cats and dogs.

Her husband, Ivan, preceded her in death on February 18, 2016, following 61 years of marriage. She was also preceded by her parents Homer and Grace Hatch and her step-mother, Bonnie Hatch.

She leaves her son, Dr. Ricky Smith (Wendy), of Burlington; her daughters, Yvette Bolz (Larry) of Olpe, KS, and Yvonne Lutz (Kevin) of Madison, KS; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Garza (Osiel), Adam Galindo (Jessica), Zach and Corey Smith, and Justin, Joel, and Jarred Lutz; 2 great-grandchildren, Kash and Elena Garza; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; siblings, Clark Hatch (Irene), Topeka, Marvin Hatch (Marilyn), Sedgwick, Gary Hatch (Beth), Natchitoches, LA, Dennis Hatch (Connie), Burlington, and Elaine Platt (Lowell), Gridley; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 7, 2018, at the Hartford United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Hartford Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.
