Darrell Lee Hess, 73, a life-long resident of Coffey County, passed away May 19, 2020, at home with his family by his side. Darrell was born July 21, 1946, on a farm east of Burlington, the second son of five children to Verlin Ira and Anna Louise (Demler) Hess.  He graduated from Burlington High School in 1964.  After high school he served in the Kansas National Guard for 6 years.

Darrell married Wilma Lou Povenmire on February 26, 1966, in Gridley, KS.  Darrell worked for Caldwell Implement Company for 5 years before moving to rural Gridley in 1970 to raise three children and farm full-time.  He later worked for Countertop Supply, Inc. (now Countertop Trends) for 19 years.  Darrell continued to farm and raise Red Angus Cattle until his death.

Darrell was a member of the Red Angus Association for 50 years.  He was also a member of the Kansas Red Angus Association, American Legion–Gridley Post 296, Kansas Farm Bureau Association and the LeRoy Co-Op Association.

Darrell and Wilma bowled in the Burlington area for 26 years.  They enjoyed attending ranch rodeos and attending the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, TX, for many years.  He loved family time, playing cards with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed attending sporting events for his kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Darrell helped area farmers with anything that needed done. He was always a phone call away, whether it was family or friends. In 2018, he attended the SCC Honor Flight.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma, of the home; daughters, Amanda (Kenny) Hoskins, Odessa, MO, Amelia Springer, Eudora, KS and son Jonathan Hess, Gridley; four grandchildren, Alex (Kayla) Hoskins, Odessa, MO, Robert Hoskins, Sedalia, MO, Ryan and Cora Springer, Eudora, KS, and one great-grandson, Beau; three brothers, Edwin Hess, Milton (Linda) Hess and David (Diana) Hess, all of Burlington; one sister, Kathryn (Arden) Payer, Westphalia, KS; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Darrell will lie in state from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Friday, May 22, 2020, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. A private family graveside will be held.
