Darrell Brownfield, 84, long-time resident of LeRoy, Kansas, passed away Friday night, May 24, 2019, at Westchester Village in Lenexa, Kansas.

He and Joyce Newkirk were married on July 15, 1956. She survives. Darrell is also survived by his daughter, Trudy (Scot) Edson of Lenexa, Kansas; two sons, Marty (Tammy) Brownfield of Topeka, Kansas and Michael Brownfield of Webb City, Missouri. Darrell and Joyce suffered the loss of a daughter, Cindy Carlton, in 1998 and a granddaughter Wendy Carlton in 1997.  Darrell was also preceded in death by his parents Don and Bertha, sisters Jeanette Sutherland and Ramona Brewer and a brother Don Brownfield.  Other survivors are a sister Judy (Gary) Sedlacek of Signal Mountain, Tennessee; nine Grandchildren, Matthew Stohs, Joshua Stohs, Rhiannon Stohs, Lisa Klaver, James Carlton, Ariele Brownfield, Sydney Brandenburg, Abby Brownfield, Kate Brownfield; three Great Grandchildren, Addison Scarrow, Gannon Scarrow, and Jackson Stohs; many nieces, nephews and friends.

After graduating from LeRoy High School Darrell spent his first year working for General Motors in the Fairfax District of Kansas City, Kansas.  Darrell returned home to the family business where he spent eighteen years working alongside his parents at Brownfield Grocery which he and Joyce purchased in 1974.  The two served the community with fresh produce, hand cut meats and many handmade sandwiches for twenty three years before retiring in 1997.  Darrell was an avid arrowhead collector, enjoyed playing the drums and sitting on the front porch visiting with neighbors and whoever dropped by.  Darrell never met a stranger and always had a joke or a story for any ear that would listen.  Darrell prided himself with the legacy he and Joyce had built into their children.  Work hard, respect others, be determined and enjoy life.  Darrell continued to build into his children and grandchildren to his very last day, encouraging them, telling them how proud he was of them and how much he loved them. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 1 at Jones Funeral Home 801 Garrettson St. Burlington, Kansas 66839.  Visitation will be at 1:00pm with Services to begin at 2:00pm.  Memorial contributions can be made to the Southern Coffey County Honor Flight in care of the Jones Funeral Home, P.O.
