Charles Alfred Shahan, 73, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at Country Place Senior Living in Chanute.

Charles was born March 12, 1949, in Higgins, TX, the son of Alfred Columbus "Buck" Shahan, Jr. and Iva Ruth Cox Shahan. He spent his early childhood in Arnett, OK. His dad died when he was ten years old. His mother was re-married to Lloyd Alderson and they moved to Yates Center where Charles would attend grade school and graduate from Yates Center High School in 1968. He attended Business College in Wichita and then he attended Emporia State University where he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity.

On July 1, 1972, Charles and Roberta Nadine "Bobbi" Rhea were married at the United Methodist Church in Yates Center. They became the parents of two children, Shelley and Justin.

He and Bobbi owned several businesses in Yates Center including the Temple Theatre/Yates Center Drive-In and Northside Plumbing and Electric. Charles had worked during the construction of the Wolf Creek Generating Station and returned to work there in 1986. While at Wolf Creek he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Friends University. He retired from Wolf Creek in 2007 as a Master Health Physics Technician after 21 years.

Charles loved all things outdoors. He enjoyed hunting deer and turkey, camping, metal detecting for old coins, and collecting arrowheads. He also spent his spare time woodworking and shared his crafts at fairs in the area.

He was active in his church and community. He was a member of the Yates Center United Methodist Church serving on various committees. He served as Woodson County Treasurer from 1973 to 1977, was a…. Past-President of the U.S.D. 366 School Board, a member of Gilead Lodge #144, A.F. & A.M., and the Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg. Following his retirement he enjoyed being a substitute school teacher at the Yates Center Schools and was well liked by the students.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wynola Evans.

He leaves Bobbi, his wife of nearly 50 years; his children, Shelley Zuperku and husband Justin of Berryton, KS, and Justin Shahan and wife Kelsie of Yates Center; five grandchildren, Jayson, Gavin, and Hudson Zuperku and Macie and Rhealee Shahan; a sister, Polly Grice, Lubbock, TX; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at the Yates Center United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Yates Center Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.
