Carrie Wells Birk, 96, life-long resident of the Gridley, Kansas area, passed away late Saturday, May 9, 2020, at The Meadows in Burlington, Kansas.

Carrie was born June 20, 1923, at Quincy, Kansas, the daughter of Orin Herbert and Anna Belle (Huston) Slough. In 1929 the family moved to Lamont, Kansas, and in 1936 they settled at their home southeast of Gridley on Buttermilk Street. Carrie graduated from Gridley Rural High School in 1941.

On February 14, 1943, she and Lee Wells were married at the farm home of his parents near Gridley. Carrie and Lee lived on their farm until they built a home in Gridley and moved to town in 1973. Her husband, Lee, preceded her in death on January 18, 1975.

On July 22, 1978, Carrie and Glenn Birk were married at Gridley. They made their home in Gridley before moving to The Meadows in Burlington in 2015. Glenn preceded her in death on May 8, 2017.

In earlier years Carrie was a member of the Prairie Chapel Methodist Church south of Gridley and later was a long-time active member of the Gridley United Methodist Church and the UMW. She was a member of White Rose Chapter #297, O.E.S. for more than 73 years and was a member of the Gridley American Legion Auxiliary.

Besides her husbands, Lee and Glenn, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ron Wells, on July 30, 1992; a son-in-law, Dean Birk, on April 22, 2018; and her three brothers, Alfred, Eugene, and Kenneth Slough.

She leaves her children, Carol Peek and husband Wayne of Mason, Michigan, Jeanette Birk of Burlington, and Bruce Wells and wife Tracy of Cottonwood Falls, KS; two step-sons, Dennis Birk and wife Linda and Curtis Birk and wife Toni of Gridley; a daughter-in-law, Karen Adams and husband Don of Yates Center, KS; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Private family funeral services will be held at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington with burial following in Gridley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ron Wells Memorial Scholarship (Kansas State University), the Gridley United Methodist Church, or White Rose Chapter #297, O.E.S., and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
