Alex Thomas Smith, Jr., 91, of rural Westphalia, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, July 23, 2018, at his home.

Alex was born April 19, 1927, in Marshall, Missouri, the son of Alex Thomas and Viola (Woods) Smith.

He grew up in Marshall and graduated from St. Peter High School there. On May 2, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II and upon his discharge on December 2, 1946, he was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He then returned to Marshall and attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall.

He moved to Kansas City and began his employment with Farmers Insurance Group. While in Kansas City he became acquainted with Jean Lawyer. They were married on June 21, 1952, in Kansas City, Missouri. This union was blessed with a daughter, Sara.

In 1962 Farmers transferred Alex to Los Angeles, California, where he was employed until his retirement in 1982. He and Jean moved to their farm north of Aliceville in 1987.

Alex was raised in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the American Legion and the N.R.A.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Curt Solomon; and his sister, Dorothy Thomas.

He leaves Jean, his wife of more than 66 years; his daughter, Sara Smith-Ray, of the home; a granddaughter, Alana Ray, Seoul, South Korea; other relatives and friends.

The family will gather with friends to remember and celebrate Alex's life from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 27, 2018, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Sarcoxie Cemetery in Sarcoxie, Missouri.
