Nelle Joan Hegwald, 80, of Waverly, KS, passed away Friday, August 16, 2013, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
Joan was born April 16, 1933, in Oklahoma City, OK, the daughter of Dick and Esther (Baker) Dilts.
She grew up in the Lauderdale Community east of Burlington and attended the Lauderdale School before graduating from Burlington High School.
On March 25, 1951, she and George Robert Hegwald were married at Yates Center, KS. They became the parents of three children.
Joan and George farmed south of Burlington for a number of years and they also owned and operated the National Hotel and Cafe in downtown Burlington.
In 1974 they moved to Waverly and Joan was a CMA at Sunset Manor until her retirement.
Her husband, George, preceded her in death on November 22, 1999. She was also preceded by two grandchildren, Jodi and Jason Dufur.
She leaves her children, Bruce Hegwald and wife Debbie, LeRoy, Brenda Dufur and husband Mel, Waverly, and Debbie Huntsman and husband Dan, Waverly; 7 grandchildren, Rita Walters, Randi Hugunin, David Foster, Darci Schroeder, Melody Dufur, Eric Dufur, and Darin Huntsman; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Waverly Senior Center and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
